The Follicular Phase: The Return of Energy & Desire // The Ovulation Cycle, Part 2

Dear ones,

After menstruation, something subtle begins to shift. The heaviness lifts. The fog clears. Energy begins to return—not all at once, but gradually.

There’s often a quiet sense that something is starting again. This is not random. This is the follicular phase aka the preovulatory phase.

What’s Happening in the Body

The follicular phase begins after menstruation ends and continues until ovulation. During this time, the body is rebuilding":

  • Estrogen begins to rise.

  • The ovaries prepare multiple follicles, each containing an immature egg.

  • The uterine lining begins to thicken again.

  • At the level of the brain, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) signals the ovaries to begin this process.

The system is organizing itself. Preparing. Rebuilding what was released during menstruation.

And as estrogen rises, many women begin to notice changes:

  • Clearer thinking

  • Improved mood

  • More energy

  • Greater motivation

This is not just psychological. Estrogen has direct effects on the brain, the vascular system, and the nervous system:

  • It increases circulation.

  • Supports neurotransmitters associated with focus and motivation.

  • Enhances the body’s ability to respond to stimulation.

In simple terms: The system is coming back online.

The Body Rebuilds Before It Expands

One of the most important things to understand about the follicular phase is that it is not yet about peak energy. It is about rebuilding capacity.

After menstruation, the body needs to:

  • replenish blood

  • restore nutrients

  • re-establish hormonal rhythm

This is a foundational phase.

And when it is supported well, the phases that follow—especially ovulation—tend to feel more stable, more vibrant, and more alive.

The Chinese Medicine Perspective

In Chinese medicine, menstruation is a time of blood movement and release. Which means that after menstruation, the body must rebuild blood again.

The follicular phase is associated with: blood building and the gradual movement of liver qi. The liver, in this system, is responsible for the smooth flow of energy and blood throughout the body.

As the follicular phase progresses, this movement begins to increase:

  • There is a sense of rising energy.

  • Vision begins to return.

  • Planning becomes easier.

  • The future starts to feel more accessible.

This is why many women feel more outwardly oriented during this phase. Not because something new is being forced—but because something is naturally coming back into motion.

The Ayurvedic Perspective

In Ayurveda, this phase is often associated with kapha energy. Kapha is building, nourishing, and stabilizing.

After the clearing of menstruation, the body moves into a phase of:

  • tissue rebuilding

  • fluid restoration

  • grounded growth

There is a sense of gentle accumulation. Not intensity. Not urgency. But steady nourishment.

As the phase progresses and estrogen continues to rise, there is a subtle transition toward pitta, which brings more activation and forward movement as ovulation approaches.

But early in the follicular phase, the emphasis is still on: building before expressing
