The Ovulation Phase as Signal: When the Body is Open, Responsive, & Alive AF // The Ovulation Cycle, Part 3

Dear ones,

We often call women’s cycle the menstrual cycle. But ovulation is the point. Which is why I think of this more as the ovulation cycle. Everything in the cycle builds toward this moment of responsiveness.

Let’s get in the ovulation phase of the ovulation cycle:

If libido is a signal, then ovulation is one of the clearest ways to observe it. Not as an idea. Not as a concept. But in the body.

We’re taught to think of ovulation as a fertility event. A moment in the cycle where the body releases an egg, where conception becomes possible. And while that’s true… it’s also incomplete.

Because ovulation is not just about reproduction. It’s about responsiveness.

Ovulation as feedback

Ovulation is one of the clearest reflections of how your system is functioning as a whole. Not just hormonally. But neurologically. Energetically. Relationally.

When ovulation is supported, what you often see is:

  • increased lubrication

  • increased blood flow to the pelvic tissues

  • more sensitivity

  • more openness to touch and connection

  • a sense of outward energy

But beyond the physiology, there’s something else.

A subtle shift in how you experience yourself:

  • more present

  • more expressive

  • more willing to be seen

  • more responsive to what’s in front of you

This is what I mean when I say: ovulation is not just fertility—it’s feedback.

The physiology (briefly, but clearly)

From a Western perspective:

  • Estrogen rises leading into ovulation

  • Luteinizing hormone (LH) surges

  • Blood flow increases

  • Cervical fluid becomes more abundant and receptive

All of this supports: Receptivity. Not just to sperm. But to sensation, connection, and input.

And this is where we start to see the bridge: libido as physiology—libido as responsiveness to life.

The Chinese Medicine Lens

In Chinese medicine, this phase is characterized by:

  • the rise of yang

  • the smooth flow of liver qi

  • outward and upward movement

This is a time of:

  • expansion

  • expression

  • circulation

When this system is in harmony, there is a sense of:

  • ease in movement

  • clarity in direction & vision

  • openness to life

When it’s not, we may see:

  • stagnation

  • frustration

  • disconnection

  • lack of responsiveness

  • unclear vision and direction

Again—not as pathology. But as information.

The Ayurvedic Lens

In Ayurveda, ovulation sits within a phase dominated by Pitta—the energy of transformation, heat, and precision. This is the point in the cycle where something becomes clear. Where something is ready. Where something can happen.

Pitta is what allows for:

  • discernment

  • direction

  • the ability to choose

  • the ability to act

So while we often associate ovulation with receptivity, there is also something very specific happening here: selectivity.

The body is not just open. It is discerning.

In this phase, you may notice:

  • clearer attraction

  • clearer desire

  • clearer sense of what you do and don’t want

  • a sharper “yes” or “no”

This is not just hormonal. It’s functional. From an Ayurvedic perspective, this is also a time when Agni—the metabolic fire—is more active. Not just in digestion of food…but in digestion of experience.

So your body is not only more responsive. It is also more capable of:

  • taking something in

  • processing it

  • and deciding what to do with it

Which connects directly to the framework we’ve been working with:

  • input (food)

  • processing (sleep)

  • output (sex)

(see my podcast episode where I go deeper into this)

Ovulation sits right at that turning point: Where what has been building becomes available for expression.

And just like with the other lenses, when this system is supported, you may experience:

  • clarity

  • confidence

  • decisiveness

  • a sense of alignment between your body and your choices

And when it’s not, you may feel:

  • irritability

  • frustration

  • indecision

  • or disconnection from what you actually want

Again—not as something to fix. But as something to read.

Receptivity without discernment is not what the body is designed for. Ovulation is both: Ovulation isn’t just about being open—it’s about being able to choose wisely and clearly.
